Business search questions

How do I look up a business in my state?

Pick your state below and open its official search. Type the main words of the name, and leave off LLC or Inc. Most states show the company's status, when it formed and its registered agent.

Who runs the business search?

Usually the Secretary of State, or whichever state office records companies. It's the same record the state uses when it decides whether a new name can be filed.

Does a clear search mean I can use the name?

It means the state is likely to accept it, and the state makes the final call when you file. It doesn't give you rights to the name, so check trademarks too.
