Owner-operators often form an LLC first, then apply for a USDOT number and operating authority in the company's name.

## The order to do it in

Form the LLC, get an EIN, then apply to FMCSA in the LLC's name so you aren't changing the name on your authority later.

## What we don't file

We form the company and get the EIN. Your USDOT number, MC authority, BOC-3, insurance filings, UCR and IFTA are separate and go through FMCSA, your insurer and your state.

## Questions

Does an LLC replace trucking insurance?

No. Federal rules set minimum coverage for carriers, and an LLC doesn't change them.
